Shades Of Romance Magazine: What made you decide to write inspirational fiction?
Cecelia Dowdy: After stumbling upon a few inspirational titles in the library, and reading them, I felt that I'd found my niche for fiction. I wanted to write stories that portrayed the Christian values taught to me by my parents.
SORM: Why did you think your story was important to tell?
DOWDY: I thought it was important because it shows Toni, the main character, shunning God. I think most people, even Christians, question God allowing certain things to happen. However, as my story shows, by serving Him, we can get through the rough spots, and we should also praise him during good times and bad.
SORM: Did you have a writing background? If not, why did you believe you could be a writer?
DOWDY: I do not have a writing background. As a matter of fact, I have a bachelor's degree in Finance. I've always loved reading, and for years I've dreamed of becoming a writer. People would sometimes tell me that I was good at descriptions, and that I'd probably be a good writer. My freshman English teacher tried to encourage me to change my major from Finance to English, since he claimed I was a good writer. I didn't start writing stories in my spare time until 1994, and I've been doing it ever since. I'm hoping and praying to get a second novel published.
SORM: What kind of support did you have with family or friends?
DOWDY: My friends and family have been very supportive of me during this whole process. They listened to my woes when I got rejected, plus they helped me to celebrate when I sold that first book! They've all purchased copies and have given me rave reviews so far!
SORM: Many writers start books, but having trouble finishing. How did you finish your book?
DOWDY: I've never started a book and didn't finish. I just keep plugging away until it's done. If I'm having trouble getting a certain scene or chapter finished, I'll tap into the resources of other writers for advice. I'm involved in several writers groups, and being a part of these community helps since writing is such a solitary job.
SORM: If you have a family at home, how did you combine writing with your family commitments?
DOWDY: Currently, I'm single with no children, so I was fortunate to spend ample time on my writing projects.
SORM: How do you look for publishers for your book?
DOWDY: Being involved in writers groups helps tremendously. By attending writer's conferences, you can network with authors, editors, and agents. I found my publisher through an editor meeting at a conference. Also, it's good to check out submission guidelines for various publishers. You can get most submission guidelines on the publisher's web sites, or other sources are The Writers Market, and Sally Stuart's Christian Writers Market Guide.
SORM: What kind of publicity did you do for your book?
DOWDY: Since my book is only available through Doubleday's Crossings and Black Expressions book clubs, I didn't have the options of promoting the way authors do when their books are in stores. I mostly sent postcards out to churches, promoting my book as a good one to read for Bible and Christian book club discussion groups.
SORM: What was your first book signing like?
DOWDY: I still haven't had one since my book is only available via the Doubleday book clubs! I have done a semi signing, though. I attended a friend's birthday party. Since most people there had purchased my book, they brought them along and I signed them! It was great etching my name across the page! A glorious feeling!
SORM: What message do you hope to convey in your book?
DOWDY: I hope it conveys the message to always have faith in the Lord, no matter what happens in life. It's tough to have deep faith, but in the end, it's worth it. It doesn't pay to be bitter and angry. We must seek God's kingdom first, and all the other things will be added!
SORM: Some people say Christian writing should be reserved for nonfiction. Why do you think writing Christian fiction is helpful?
DOWDY: I think it's helpful because by telling a story, it's sometimes easier to get your point across to your audience. Jesus often taught using parables, which is a type of story. I believe He smiles when he looks upon the Christian fiction titles dotting the shelves, glorifying his name!
SORM: How can writing inspirational fiction be entertaining and spiritual?
DOWDY: It can be entertaining because the whole writing process is entertaining. Building believable characters and bringing them to life on paper gives a writer a good feeling. Plus, glorifying God gives the words an extra boost! I feel like I've paid a tribute to God with each book that I finish!
SORM: What do you feel is your greatest achievement as a writer?
DOWDY: Getting my first book published!
SORM: What advice would you give for aspiring inspirational fiction writers?
DOWDY: Write as much as you can. Also, join a writers group. Both American Christian Romance Writers (ACRW) and Romance Writers of America (RWA) are excellent for aspiring writers in the romance and Christian fiction categories. Read, read, read! Read as many books in the genre that you'd like to target. Analyze these books and decide why they're so good! Editors are always amazed when they receive submissions by knowledgeable writers! Also, try and find a critique group. Sometimes it might take awhile to find a group/partner that matches your needs, but when you do, the benefits are amazing. Plus analyzing another writer's stories can help you while critiquing your own work.
SHADES OF ROMANCE MAGAZINE WOULD LIKE TO THANK MS. DOWDY FOR THIS INTERVIEW. WE WISH YOU MANY BLESSINGS WITH YOUR WRITING.
